AI sex robots: yes, they’re real, and you won’t believe how advanced they are

When I received an email asking me if I’d like to research and write a feature about AI sex robots, I accepted the commission immediately. Not for any hands-on testing opportunities, mind. It just made for a refreshing change off the back of a hectic few weeks covering Black Friday sales and fuelling the hellish fires of capitalism. Praise Bezos.

Having said that, this is far from my first rodeo covering the convergence of tech and erotica. Many moons ago, I was one of the first people in the world to try virtual reality porn. It was… an experience.

But today, we’re leaving the land of the virtual. AI sex robots are a thing, and it should come as no surprise. After all, erotic cave paintings, depictions, and statues going as far back as 12,000 years have shown that human nature hasn’t changed much.

As for the modern equivalents? They’re much more advanced than you might think…

RealDoll X

The RealDoll has been the gold standard of lifelike dolls for years, and the RealDoll X project throws AI-powered smarts into the mix. The result? A talking, animatronic head named Harmony that attaches to a life-sized RealDoll body, creating the illusion of a sultry robot companion with personality.

Harmony can hold basic conversations, remember details about you, and even crack jokes – all powered by a smartphone app that lets you customise her personality. Her expressive face blinks, smiles, and chats, synced to a voice with various accent options.

Be ready to invest though – the AI-driven robotic head alone starts around $7350, and that’s on top of the pricey RealDoll body. There’s a yearly subscription for the app’s AI services, too. A male version, Henry, is in development as well.

Emma

Designed by a Chinese robotics firm AI-AITech, Emma is a humanoid sex doll with animatronic features and bilingual chat skills. Emma can move her head, blink, talk in English or Chinese, and even make noises when touched, thanks to built-in sensors.

Her body is built with a metal skeleton and a pliable food-grade TPE skin for realism. She even has an internal heater to warm her to human body temperature for… obvious reasons.

Customisation is a big draw – buyers can choose from multiple face designs as well as body type, skin tone, and even whether the genitalia are fixed or removable. Emma’s AI is cloud-connected – she can tell jokes, share weather updates, do basic maths, and remember your name and interests, learning more the more you chat.

Future upgrades planned include facial recognition and multilingual support. Tech enthusiasts can even extend her capabilities. Priced around £3650, Emma is one of the more affordable AI dolls (though still a substantial investment).

OkSexDoll

If the high prices of premium sex robots give you sticker shock, OkSexDoll offers more budget-friendly AI companions. Their flagship models Vivian and Charis cost only about from $1,580 each.

These dolls still pack in animatronic features – they can smile, blink, move their heads/neck, and even respond to touch with sound or reactions. Buyers can also customise the doll’s appearance extensively. These are made in China and primarily ship from there, but the company does serve international customers.

AINIDOLL

AINIDOLL’s range of AI dolls leverages cloud AI to make their companions smarter. Each doll has a fully robotic head with a cloud-connected AI personality. They respond to voice commands and questions with a lifelike voice, and their facial movements sync with speech.

Owners can also connect to their doll via a smartphone app to “chat” or control it remotely. These dolls also support heating and touch responsiveness. Prices start from around $2800.

Smart Doll World

Smart Doll World sells a lineup of “Megan” AI sex robots with about 13 variations. These bots can perform a wide range of expressions, including smiling, frowning, and raising/lowering eyebrows.

The dolls have touch sensors and an AI that becomes more responsive the more you interact, and offer advanced features like a heated body. They offer an annual subscription to tweak your doll’s responses or personality traits via software. Each doll is about $3,670, with optional extras.

Replika

If the thought of a physical doll is too much and/or too expensive, Replika’s virtual AI friend pares things back by offering a virtual companion that lives in your phone or PC.

Powered by generative AI, Replika learns from your interactions and can form a unique personality over time. It previously included erotic roleplay features, which were controversially removed and later restored for early users. Replika operates on a freemium model – basic companionship is free, but features like voice calls, AR, and spicy roleplay require a Pro subscription.

A wave of other NSFW-friendly AI chat platforms has emerged, including apps like Janitor AI, Chai, and Nastia. These allow users to chat or role-play with customizable AI characters and engage in steamy, evolving virtual conversations. Some platforms offer AI-generated voice, images, and memory capabilities. Pricing ranges from free trials to ~$10–20 per month. This is the most accessible way to get into AI romance, with users and creators around the globe.
