Apple has “all good given up” on its Vision Pro mixed reality headset line, according to a stunning new report that says there are “no plans” to launch a follow up version.

According to MacRumors sources claiming the company has lost interest after the 2025 Vision Pro refresh with the M5 chip and the more comfortable headband has failed.

The insiders told the site the Vision Pro have revealed an “unusually high percentage of returns” that have exceeded other Apple products by a considerable margin. And, in total, Apple has sold just 600,000 in total around the world, according to the report.

The sources say Apple has “stopped work” on the Vision Pro and effectively disbanded the team that was working on hardware, some of them are now working on Siri team, according to the report. Apple may revisit the line un the future if an opportunity arises to create a much cheaper and more comfortable version than the $3500 headset, the report adds.

However, the future seems to be the smart glasses that will initially rival specs like the Meta Ray-Bans options and others incoming from Samsung and Google. If they go well, it is expected that Apple adds a display into the mix to enable the wearer to view content in augmented reality as well as receiving guidance from Siri based on the cameras in the frames.

Given the level of investment in the Vision Pro headset over heaven-knows how many years in research and development, it would be the most notable product failure in Apple’s history if it chose to pull the plug at this stage. It was never likely that the expensive device, with niche appeal to go along with its incredible price tag was going to sell in giant numbers. However, it was thought that after the initial proof of concept device, they would eventually get more affordable.

However, the learnings are likely to make their way into the smart glasses line that looks much more in line with future trends than whopping great headsets.
