Apple bringing AI right into the Camera app in iOS 27 – report

Apple is planning to bring AI into the stock Camera app, when it releases iOS 27 for iPhone models later this year, according to a new report.

The latest from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman says the Visual Intelligence feature, which launched alongside the iPhone 16 and is available on iPhone 15 Pro devices all the way up to the most recent iPhone 17 models, will be more visible in iOS 27.

Right now, it’s accessible via the Camera Control/Action Button, the Lock Screen or Control Centre and it enables users to show Apple Intelligence a scene through the camera lens, or a pre-existing photo or screenshot. As present the functionality exists outside of the camera app itself, but according to Bloomberg’s reporting it’ll be nestled alongside options like Photo, Video and Portrait on the capture screen once iOS 27 rolls around. It might be labelled under a ‘Siri’ heading according to the reporting from the reliable Apple watcher.

The idea is to make the feature more visible and easier for users to access in an app they commonly use to capture information when taking pictures of posters or menus, and such. This might, according to the report, get users more comfortable with using AI because it exists in a more natural environment rather than, having to go out of their way.

Put it this way, I know Visual Intelligence exists on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Have I ever used it? No. It just never comes to mind. Yet I do think to open camera app to scan a QR code, for instance. The same logic could apply here. So this could certainly solve one aspect of the AI adoption issue for Apple.

Or Apple could also just accept that the vast majority of people are, in my opinion, completely fine with using their iPhone without the interference of crap artificial intelligence tools. Just a thought. Just yesterday, we got word from Gurman that the Photos app is going to be infiltrated by AI tools that will add fake elements to photos that again, few people are shouting from the rooftops demanding.
