Panerai launches its rarest watch yet – made from a metal used in nuclear submarines

Panerai has unveiled the Submersible Navy Seals Afniotech Experience PAM01089, a dive watch with a case made from hafnium – a dense, corrosion-resistant metal so rare it has never before been used in watchmaking at this level.

The watch is limited to just 35 pieces, which is impressive, given how difficult hafnium is to obtain and machine.

Hafnium is found only in tiny concentrations within zirconium ore, and global annual production runs to just tens of tons. It is 70-percent heavier than stainless steel. Machining it demanded five-axis equipment, constant tool changes, and round-the-clock human supervision.

The result is a 47mm sandblasted case with a distinctive silver-grey tone and subtle blue hues. The sandblasted finish isn’t just aesthetic. Underwater, it eliminates reflections that could compromise a diver’s position.

Water resistance reaches 1000 metres (100 bar). Every component is tested individually before assembly, then the completed watch is pressure-tested to 125-percent of its rated depth.

Inside sits Panerai’s P.9010/GMT automatic calibre, offering a 72-hour power reserve, GMT function, date display, and a stop-seconds mechanism for precise synchronisation. That last feature is a direct nod to Panerai’s origins supplying the Italian Navy, where timing could be the difference between mission success and failure.

The dial is shaded anthracite, with Super-LumiNova X2 luminosity (the brightest available). Bezel indexes and the minute hand glow blue; everything else glows green.

Visual details reference the U.S. Navy Seals throughout: a target-style small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, yellow accents, the Seals logo on the case back, and a “1000m” engraving on the crown-protecting bridge lever.

The watch comes on a black rubber strap with a titanium buckle, presented in a blue cherry wood box with a second grey canvas strap included.

Buying one also unlocks something money can’t buy (except in this occasion): a 3-day Special Operations Experience in Florida in March 2027, training alongside U.S. Navy Seals in challenges built around endurance and teamwork (personally, I’d pay extra not to do that, but each to their own).

The PAM01089 goes on sale next month – priced at $99,500 / £65,500.
