Xbox compact controller leaked and it looks perfect for cloud gaming

Microsoft may be preparing top launch a compact version of its Xbox wireless game controller, designed for use with Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Images published by consumer product regulators in Brazil, which were picked up by Technoblog. Microsoft hasn’t announced anything official yet, but the Anatel regulator has comprehensively lifted the lid.

There’s Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, as well as 2.5GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 6 to enable connection to the host gaming device. The controller will have a 500 mAh battery built-in, but it doesn’t appear like there’ll be an option to shove the old AA’s in there. It’ll be powered by Realtek’s RTL8730E chip with a 2x 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A7 cores. The images show a USB-C port for charging, a pairing button and all the usual gaming buttons you’ll need.

The slimline controller is a bit of a departure from the familiar design, but that would defy the point of releasing such a controller in the first place. It appears Xbox will pitch this as an option to slide into a day bag, so users can access their games via cloud gaming on a smartphone, tablet or laptop perhaps. There are plenty of third-party options from the likes of 8BitDo that’ll do the job for you, but a first-party option will always be preferred.

We’ll wait and see if and when Xbox will drop this new accessory, and how much it’ll cost. Will it be cheaper?
