Sony has announced it is raising the prices of its one-month and three-month PlayStation Plus subscription service, just months after raising the price of PlayStation 5 games consoles.

In a post on X from the PlayStation account on Monday, Sony announced prices for new subscribers were going up in the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom. Existing subscribers won’t be affected right now, and it appears annual subscriptions are off the hook.

Sony says it’s down to “ongoing market conditions” but it doesn’t get specific about how a game subscription service is affected by those market conditions,.

The new prices will be $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for 1-month subscriptions and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for 3-month subscriptions. Across the board it’s an increase of one/three dollars, euros and pounds respectively. The price change comes into effect tomorrow.

Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will increase in select regions. Due to ongoing market conditions, prices will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for 1-month subscriptions and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for 3-month subscriptions.…

In late March Sony announced it was raising PS5 console prices across the board. That came into effect in early April. In the UK, PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro went up £90. In the US, the increase was between $100 and $150 for the PS5 Pro. So, in summary… the consoles are going up, the subscriptions are going up, the next-gen PS6 will be unprecedentedly expensive too, by all accounts.

Sony said at the team: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”

As one X user replied to Sony’s post: at “some point “market conditions” just becomes the industry version of “because we can.”
