Huawei’s new MatePad Pro Max is thinner and lighter than an iPad Pro

The iPad Pro is hardly a porker, but hold one up alongside the new Huawei MatePad Pro Max and Apple’s fanciest tablet starts to look a little podgy.

At 4.7mm thick (not including the camera bump) and weighing just 499g the MatePad Pro Max is thinner and lighter than Apple’s M5-powered rectangle but still comes with a slightly larger OLED screen (albeit only by 0.2in).

That display is squeezed between skinny 3.5mm bezels and Huawei hasn’t scrimped on the pixels, with a resolution of 3000×2000 and 1600 nits of brightness, so outdoor use shouldn’t be a problem, particularly if you opt for the one with the PaperMatte coating, which stops it turning into a mirror when the sun comes out. That’ll add 10g to the weight but even then it still won’t test your arm muscles as much as the same-sized iPad.

It runs HarmonyOS 4.3, which means you’ll have to sideload any Google apps, but you can have three windows open at once so it should be more than capable of multitasking. Huawei’s being coy on exactly which processor it has picked to power the MatePad Pro Max but says it’s 20% faster than its predecessor, with 12GB of RAM and a choice between either 256GB or 512GB of storage.

What size battery you get depends on where you live, but outside of the EU it comes with a larger 10,400mAh one. Nice to see those Brexit bonuses finally coming through, eh?

To get the most out of the MatePad Pro Max you might want to add the keyboard cover, which also includes a proper laptop-style trackpad, and M-Pencil Pro stylus.

Oh, and that aforementioned camera bump on the back houses a 50MP snapper with autofocus, but as always we must remind you that only complete muppets take photos with tablets.

Prices for the MatePad Pro Max will start at £1000 / €1399 when it goes on sale at the end of June, although Huawei couldn’t be any more specific than that on a date.
