Instagram has finally added one of its most-requested features, and if you’ve ever spent far too long trying to make your profile grid look presentable on the latest smartphones, you’ll probably be pleased.
The Meta-owned social network is now letting users rearrange posts on their profile grid, regardless of when they were originally published. Until now, profile grids were largely locked into chronological order, aside from the ability to pin a handful of posts at the top. That meant anyone chasing a carefully curated aesthetic either had to plan posts meticulously in advance, or resort to deleting and reposting content.
The feature has been a long time coming. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri first confirmed it was in development nearly a year ago, while app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi spotted references to an Edit Grid tool as far back as 2022.
Starting now, Instagram users around the world can move posts around their profile however they like. To use the feature, simply head to your profile, press and hold on a post, and select the new Reorder grid option. You’ll then be able to drag posts into different positions until your profile looks exactly how you want it.
Pinned posts still behave slightly differently. If you’ve pinned content to the top of your profile, those posts remain fixed in place, and can’t be moved around during the reordering process.
While it might sound like a relatively minor update, it’s one that creators, photographers, brands, and anyone obsessed with maintaining a particular visual style have been asking for for years. Previously, achieving a specific layout often meant planning multiple posts ahead, or using third-party grid-planning apps to visualise how a profile would eventually look.
The grid reordering tool is rolling out globally from today on Instagram’s iPhone and Android apps. There doesn’t appear to be any limit on how often you can reshuffle your profile, so if you suddenly decide that holiday photo from three years ago deserves pride of place, Instagram is finally happy to let you move it there.
