Apple TVs dating documentary series ‘The Last Person on Earth’ sounds like a high brow Love Island

Apple TV is getting into the reality TV game; not that the company would have you call its first-ever dating show that. Instead, the company is promising a ‘dating documentary’ called The Last Person on Earth as its first step into a popular but often crass genre you wouldn’t associate with the high brow premium TV pitch Apple aims for with its original streaming content.

As the title suggests, the forthcoming eight-part series will pair singles with their polar opposites. The couples will be helped towards common ground by therapists and matchmakers. The fact it takes place in a ‘romantic and remote destination’ will only liken the comparisons to the Love Island franchise.

In a press release today, Apple explains the concept: “With more single people than ever before and increasing levels of polarisation and social isolation, this innovative experiment asks the question: could the last person on Earth you think you’d ever want to date end up being the one person you can’t live without? And will an unexpected pairing in paradise open their horizons and be the beginning of a life-changing relationship?”

Leading the matchmaking will be Esther Perel, a couples therapist and New York Times best selling author. She’s inviting the participants to drop their dating checklists and assumptions about compatibility.

She says: “The Last Person on Earth is a bold exploration of relationships that challenges everything we assume about compatibility; inviting people to drop the checklist and embrace dating as an adventure into the unknown. When we choose to step outside the narrow boundaries of what feels familiar or safe, passionate love stories can flourish.”

It’s not clear yet when the show will air.

Also in Apple TV land today, the company announced the fifth season of one of its original hits The Morning Show. It’ll be the final season.
