If you’re a recreational runner trying to stay in shape, or an athlete preparing for an autumn marathon, the summer months appear to be getting tougher and tougher. Trust me, I live in south Florida. Thankfully a fitness app that is along for every step of a lot of runners’ outings, is along to provide some relief.
Strava-owned Runna has revealed a new feature that adjusts workouts based on the heat and humidity runners are subjected to. That promises to be a bonus on those days when the plan previously called for the pace to be pushed, but the conditions would make it inadvisable and bordering on dangerous.
With the new Adapt for Heat feature, subscribers may see smarter pacing based on the weather. It enables users to get the same benefit from the training run, by taking things a little slower, while keeping the training safe and effective.
“By reducing the pace of a run during hotter conditions, the same training benefit is experienced when running at a quicker pace on a cooler day,” the company says in a blog post. “With this latest feature, coach-recommended adjustments to training sessions match pace effort to weather conditions, helping people train smarter when the temperature rises.”
There’s also a new colour-coded hourly forecast letting runners know the best time to set out on their run. Adjustments are based on the feel-like temperature and tuned to the duration and nature of the running session (interval, hills, long-run, recovery, etc.).
Runna also announced it was adding an Upcoming Plans feature “which allows runners to create and schedule multiple training plans in advance so they can plan and see their entire year of training in one glance” and a Post-Race Recovery Plan “designed by expert coaches automatically created the moment a runner starts a 5k-50k race plan, so that by race day a plan on how to recover properly after crossing the finish line is already waiting.”
