Ring Peephole Camera 2K has higher resolution, slimmer design, lower price and you won’t need a drill

Amazon-owned smart home provider Ring is bringing a new version of its Ring Peephole video doorbell with improved resolution, shortly after discontinuing the original model.

The Peephole camera has been a popular option for renters who can’t go drilling into the doors and door frames to install the company’s other cameras, which is why Amazon’s decision to drop the original camera from its line-up earned some consternation.

Now it’s back with a slimmer design and that improved resolution over the 1080p predecessor. The no-drill installation is still designed to fit into the existing peephole in front doors via a tube that has the camera angled towards the ground on the outside, and the battery component in the inside of the door.

The 2K resolution is backed by a 6x Enhanced Zoom, 140º Horizontal x 140º Vertical viewing angles, live view and two-way talk. There’s motion detection alerts, and a quick release battery pack to enable easy removal and recharge. You’ll get, on average, four months between recharges according to the company.

Viewers will lose access to their original peephole view, but will be able to check from anywhere in the world via their handset. Not a bad trade-off. Naturally, it’s compatible with devices like the Amazon Echo Show so you can take a look in real-time when you hear the doorbell ring. As well as proactive mobile alerts you’ll be able to say “Alexa show me the front door” at any time.

The first generation model, which first arrived in 2019, had a neat knock detection feature thanks to a built-in impact sensor. However, it’s not clear if that feature has been carried across because Ring isn’t advertising it. We’ve asked for clarity on that front.

It’s available in three colours described as Speckled Gray, Speckled White and Matte Mocha. It can be preordered on Amazon or Ring right now and it’ll ship in two weeks on August 19. It costs $100 in the United States and £80 in the UK. That’s a little cheaper than the original too.
