Apple has increased the trade-in value for its existing crop of iPhone models; perhaps in anticipation of the expected price hikes for the forthcoming iPhone 18 range.
In newly updated US trade-in values spotted by 9to5Mac, Apple is also offering consumers more for iPad, Mac and Apple Watch models.
The big news is the iPhone trade-ins with the majority of models, from the iPhone 16 Pro Max to the iPhone 8, now more valuable when you’re buying a new device. The 2024 iPhone 16 Pro Max is now worth up to $720 against a new phone, where as before the maximum you could recoup was $695. The iPhone 16 Pro has a much larger increase; from up to $560 to $630.
All the way down the trough, an iPhone 8 in good condition and working order will now get you $40 instead of $35. Not a lot, but a fiver is a fiver. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch line also gets a couple of increases, including a prospective $15 boost for the Series 10 watch and an extra $5 for a Series 9. The value of the Ultra models are unchanged. In terms of iPads, the iPad Pro goes from a max trade-in value of $690 to $720.
As Apple giveth, it also taketh away when it comes to Android phones. The company will give you $10 less as top value for the Google Pixel 8 Pro – $155 instead of $165. That phone is older now, of course, but it does feel like there’s a little bit of shade included in that one. Apple will also give you not a lot of money if you want to be rid of an old Samsung phone or OnePlus phone.
Speculation suggests Apple may charge up to $300 more for an iPhone 18 Pro Max this year, in line with an increase in the bill of goods for this year’s model. An extra $30 when trading in your old phone isn’t going to absorb the entire blow, but it’d be better than nothing.
Apple also has the new Apple Upgrade program, which will offer lease-to-own plans with the option of buying outright at the end of the term or upgrading to the next device.
