Samsung has responded to online criticism of the display on its Galaxy Z Fold 8 foldable handset, asserting that a perceived flaw is actually a design feature to protect the screen from damage.
Users of the Samsung support forums noted that, when pressure is applied to the corners of the inner display, it has the propensity to flex slightly inwards and away from the bezel. Some users have been prodding and poking at their phones – possibly risking damaging them in the first place – and many have expressed concern that this may be a quality control issue with their particular handset.
Samsung has popped along to explain why it built the display to do precisely this, claiming its a preventative measure to stop items trapped between the phone’s two screens causing damage to the display when folded.
In a statement, Samsung says: “If something like sand adheres to the top surface of the internal display, the screen could get scratched when the Fold is folded. We designed it so the display indents slightly to provide a cushioning effect and prevent damage. Since this feature was prepared to ensure consumers do not experience inconvenience, we have not provided a separate official explanation.”
That all seems fair enough, but sites like 9to5Google point out that the propensity for the display to curve inwards does seem to vary on different handsets.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 – with a wider format than previous models – has been a smash hit among foldable fans, according to the company. Samsung says its pre-order sales smashed its previous record for foldable phones by 17%, while the Z Fold 8 pre-orders beat last year’s model by a whopping 70%. Samsung’s grip on the foldable crown will be tested from later this week when Apple announces its long-awaited iPhone Ultra.
