Thinking of buying a new Mac? You might want to give it a few months! Apple is preparing to launch a new iMac desktop machine powered by the next-generation M6 processor – and before this year is out too!

Apple didn’t refresh the iMac for the M5 series, so we’re due a refresh and, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, the M6 series will also receive some new colour options. Currently, the super-slim iMac M4 is available in two-tone blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green and silver. That green option is a thing of absolute beauty by the way.

“If you’ve been holding out for a new iMac, your wait shouldn’t be much longer. All signs point to the M6 models being close to launch, and you should be able to buy one before the end of the year,” Gurman wrote in the most recent instalment of his Power On newsletter.

The iMac M4 offers a 24-inch Retina display with a 4.5K resolution and a new glare resistant nano‑texture glass option. That’s the only display option and it doesn’t seem likely there’ll be a larger or smaller iMac within any M6 refresh. The 24-inch option sits in the middle of the previous 21.5-inch and 27-inch Intel models from the turn of the decade. It’s hard to see Apple going up or down again, especially when the iMac offers support for up to two external 6K displays via the four Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Those excited about an M6 refresh might see that enthusiasm tempered by the likely price increases. Apple raised the prices of its Mac products in June, but the continued pressures caused by the RAM and storage crises might see those prices soar further when new models arrive later this year. If Apple does update the iMac, it may be sometime around October where Apple has often launched new Mac products.
