With the iPhone Ultra now less than a week away from being a reality we’re hearing another reported Apple foldable may have been abandoned.
The rumoured large screen foldable iPad / MacBook hybrid that’s been the subject of speculation for a few years now, but has now been wiped from the roadmap according to a new report. The purported device, which has been said to have a display size of up to 20-inches, is said to have a large touchscreen display and keyboard and has previously been tipped by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman as a product Apple is exploring.
The new report comes from research firm Omdia (via 9to5Mac), which forecasts that Apple has decided to cancel “the product plan of the 16.1-inch to 18-inch foldable MacBook.”
It’s not the first we’ve heard of this falling by the wayside, despite it reportedly being a “priority’ of new CEO John Ternus who took over this week. Earlier this year, Gurman predicted the device was experimental and might not become a consumer produce.
He wrote: “Apple has been working on a roughly 20-inch foldable iPad. This device has been a Ternus priority but may end up being a wacky experiment that doesn’t see the light of day, according to several people who have worked on it.”
I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple took this device off the table as it has always seemed a little fanciful. Full-size touchscreen keyboards have never been very user friendly and the iPad Pro / Magic Keyboard combination would likely be preferable for a lot of users anyway.
We do expect the iPhone Ultra foldable to make an appearance on September 9.
