As summer returns, I’m again reminded of my limits as I head into the great outdoors: I can put up with a heavy, uncomfortable backpack, bug bites, mud, and even bland dehydrated food, but I will not forsake my morning brew.I’ve tried every imaginable coffee gadget in my half-century of camping. These range from simple drip systems when ultralight backpacking, an AeroPress when not weighing every gram, French press plungers when assisted by bicycle, and small countertop coffee makers when adventuring by van. Yet I keep returning to handheld espresso makers whenever possible for reasons of taste, convenience, and —…

Introduction Multi-room music systems can sometimes feel a bit… tribal. If the big names aren’t locking you into their own ecosystems, they’re dictating your choice of streaming services. God forbid you want to mix and match hardware. The HomePod 2’s insistence on AirPlay effectively blacklisting Android phone owners is just one example. The WiiM Sound does things a little differently. The firm’s first all-in-one wireless speaker naturally plays nicely with its siblings, but is surprisingly open to collabs with other brands. It also sports a look that wouldn’t seem out of place in an Apple store and even beats the…

The Olympics may be the world’s greatest show, but the World Cup is the most-watched sporting event globally. According to FIFA, the 2022 tournament in Qatar had around 5 billion people engaged across all platforms – so TV, streaming, social media and digital -while the final between Argentina and France had around 1.5 billion viewers. At a time when it’s tempting to say that linear TV is dying, it’s is still massive during the World Cup, with around 2.9 billion people still watching the tournament via a television set. With this year’s edition taking place in three countries – the…

After getting its hands on a Trump phone and tearing it apart, iFixit has confirmed what I first reported back in February: the T1 Phone is an almost exact duplicate of the HTC U24 Pro.iFixit partnered with NBC to get hold of the network’s media sample of the Trump phone, along with a U24 Pro. They ran the phones through a CT scanner, tore them down to parts, and even put them back together into a functional Frankenstein phone with the U24 Pro’s board inside the T1 Phone’s chassis, confirming along the way that the two phones are functionally identical. There…

YouTube is reintroducing private messaging after testing new ways for users to share videos and “have conversations about them” last year. In an announcement on its official blog, YouTube says it’s now starting to expand the in-app video sharing and messaging feature to users in the US and “other global regions” who are 18 or older. There are some differences with the new messaging system, however: YouTube users are required to verify their age before accessing the feature, and can only talk with a person after sending them an invitation link via third-party messaging platforms. The chat feature can be accessed…

The CFTC is considering its first regulation for prediction markets, as arrests over “insider trading” on everything from military operations to Google Search data continue to stack up. As CoinDesk reports, a notice of proposed rulemaking says “the proposal would establish a structured framework for evaluating whether such contracts involve an activity enumerated in Section 5c(c)(5)(C) of the Commodity Exchange Act —activity that involves terrorism, assassination, war, gaming, or conduct that is unlawful under federal or state law—and, if so, whether that contract is contrary to the public interest.”Separately, Kalshi announced on Wednesday that it’s introducing new market integrity measures…

Bluesky will be getting “communities,” which will function as smaller spaces where you can “go deeper and hang out with people who care about the same stuff” sometime this year, according to head of product Alex Benzer. They will be built on the decentralized AT Protocol that underpins Bluesky, with Benzer saying that “it’s a new structure for everyone” that’s part of the “Atmosphere” (a shorthand for the AT Protocol ecosystem).Benzer listed out a “few ideas we have in mind so far” in a thread. “On Bluesky, you’ll be able to create communities, join them, post in them, and get…

Apple’s new Siri AI is finally here, and so far, it seems like it works. I have access and have been messing around with it, and my biggest impression so far is that Siri AI is quite curt — which I mean as a compliment. Many AI chatbots are cheery and wordy. While a more verbose and casual personality can make a chatbot seem friendlier and more fun to talk to, there are instances of users becoming extremely attached to their chatbot of choice. People have fallen in love with chatbots. When OpenAI suddenly shut down GPT-4o, users grieved its loss,…

Delay in start of production for Framework Laptop 13 ProAs we were preparing Framework Laptop 13 Pro for mass production ramp, we discovered two issues, one on the new haptic touchpad and another on the custom display. We’ve since root caused and found solutions for both of these. However, to bring in these updates, we need to delay the start of mass production, which pushes first batch shipments about one month from late June into late July, with some risk of some units in early August. This likely pushes most July batch shipments into August. We plan to catch up…

Typing a few letters and numbers into my web browser, I find myself gaping at the identity documents of complete strangers. The passport of a young woman from Germany. The passport of a man from Spain with glasses resting on his head. The front and back of another man’s driver’s license, a stereotypically goofy expression on his face. They were all sitting unprotected at public URLs, with no password or access control of any sort. If I sent you a link, you could have looked at someone’s passport.“We have to do something about it as fast as possible, because people will…
