Bose has updated its open-design Ultra Open earbuds with a second-generation model, while adding a pair of sport buds to the range.

The American manufacturer’s first entry to the open-ear market since 2024 is headlined by the $299 /£300 Ultra Open Earbuds 2nd Gen. They promise to be louder and offer better bass thanks to a new driver.

I own the first-generation wireless earbuds and, despite some other complaints, I had no problem with the volume levels, but I did feel the bass was lacking somewhat. I wasn’t upset about it. It’s the trade-off you make when you choose this format. Plus I don’t listen to a lot of bass-heavy music.

Elsewhere, Bose is adding new software features like SpeechClarity, which is a call quality feature that promises to enhance your voice. The company is adding an Auto Volume feature that’ll automatically adjust the volume depending on where you’re at. There’s also a Cinema Mode that brings spacial audio into the mix.

Bose is also improving the battery life, giving listeners an extra 90 minutes from a single charge. Advertised battery life is now 9 hours and the case now supports wireless charging. The design adds a little sheen with a beveled finish.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as if Bose has resolved my major issue with the first generation model – the on-device controls. They are a royal pain in the butt to use. Press the button three times to skip backwards, press twice to skip forward. Press and hold the right bud to increase. Press and hold the left bud to decrease. Not for me!

The Bose Sport Open Earbuds (above) are a little more fitness-focused. I found the first-gen Open Ultra to be a great option for the marathon I ran in May. The battery lasted a long time, the fit was great, and they didn’t flinch at the sweat on a hot day.

So what’s new here? Well the design is altered to provide snugger fit and a silicone finish with IP54 resistance to better cope with the elements. The Bose Sport Open Earbuds cost $199/£200. Both models are available from October 1.
