Xbox is rumoured to be planning a big change to Game Pass, which could dramatically undercut the reason to subscribe to play the best Xbox games in the first place.
According to a new rumour, Microsoft may drop Day One game releases as part of the proposition. That’d mean no more first-party titles from the likes of Microsoft Game Studios, Bethesda or Activision Blizzard on the day they’re released to buy.
This year, Gears of War E-Day is arriving as a Day One release on October 6, and in February the Fable reboot will follow. However, if the rumour is correct, the days of these AAA titles dropping for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers immediately could come to a shuddering halt thereafter.
According to the poster Slayven on the ResetEra forums, who is sharing information from a source he says has a solid past record, GamePass Ultimate without ads will drop to $20 a month, which would be a $3 reduction on the current, recently-dropped price that saw Call of Duty removed.
“They are reducing price by $3 because there won’t be day 1 new games releasing on the service starting Feb – April,” the post says. A $3 price decrease in exchange for the loss of Game Pass’ best feature? Yeah, that wouldn’t go over well at all. The leaker also says that access to cloud streaming is going away from the standard subscription and would be a $6/month add-on for 25 hours.
The leaker also says access to the Game Pass library will be made available as a standalone option for $15 a month while gamers could be able to choose standalone access to online multiplayer for $11 a month too. Overall it would be much more a la carte, but without the carrot of all those Day One games.
None of it makes sense. So it’s worth taking this rumour with the heftiest punch of salt you can muster.
