iPhone 18 Pro tipped for feature under-display Face ID, but what about the Dynamic Island?

More reports have suggested the headline physical change for this year’s flagship iPhones will see the addition of the long-awaited under-display Face ID technology.

On the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the large, floating pill-shaped Dynamic Island on the Pro models will become a punch hole for the camera, with the rest of the tech out of sight beneath the OLED panel, recent reports have suggested. The latest publication to weigh-in is the Digital Chat Station on Weibo (via MacRumors), that lists the purported display sizes for the next-generation models.

It’s not clear whether the Face ID sensors going underneath the display would mean the end of the Dynamic Island entirely, given that’s proven to be quite a useful feature since its inception on the iPhone 14 Pro as a replacement for the derided display notch. Some users may miss the live updates and contextual information from open apps like Uber, Maps, the Timer, and plenty more. They may prefer the Dynamic Island over a simple hole for the selfie camera? Or might there be a way for Apple to incorporate both?

According to the report, the display sizes are staying the same across the range. 6.3-inches for the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro, 6.5-inches for the iPhone Air and 6.9-inches for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. All four phones will offer a 120Hz LPTO refresh rate. But only the Pro models will get the under-screen Face ID, according to the report.

Today’s update comes following previous reports, from the likes of The Information, which had previously tipped the arrival of under-display facial recognition within the iPhone 18 Pro range in 2026.

Back in December, the site reported the new Face ID tech and the front camera will be moved to the top left corner of the display. Other than that, the devices will look pretty similar to the existing handsets.

Not to worry, though. We recently got the iPhone Air with a sleeker new design and the iPhone Fold is still thought to be on the way. Plus, we’ve got the 20th Anniversary edition pencilled in for 2027. Plenty of iPhone design revolution to come.
