Pixel 11 Extreme Charging Mode Explained: How Google brings a power boost when you need it most

The new Google Pixel 11 smartphone range isn’t overwhelmed by new features, but one of them is a new Extreme Charging Mode that delivers a new way to replenish the battery when time is of the essence.

The new Extreme Charging Mode is designed to focus the Pixel 11 phone’s resources on optimising charging. Google says the feature “pauses background activity and non-essential apps so the device charges faster.” It could be a major boon if you forget to charge your phone before a long day out, for example.

Google explains: “When you need power and don’t have time to wait around, Pixel’s ultra-fast wired charging helps to get a massive battery boost in minutes. In about 30 minutes, you can reach up to 75% wired charge on Pro XL, 55% on Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro, and 50% on Pro Fold. And now, you can turn on Extreme Charging Mode to focus your phone’s performance entirely on powering up, and get an ultra-fast boost when you need it most.”

There’s also a boost to wireless charging thanks to the new Pixelsnap Charger. That promises 29% faster wireless charging than before. The Pixelsnap Charger is very similar to Apple’s MagSafe charging puck and it relies on the Qi2.2 wireless charging standard. Magnets keep it in place while charging at 25W.

Google promises that your Google Pixel phone, when fully replenished will work for more than 24 hours between charging, with some of those efficiency gains come via the Google Tensor.

The company also uses tech like Adaptive Battery, that learns to “prioritize apps that are more important to you. Lesser-used apps that don’t need to be constantly running in the background are pushed out of the device’s memory when you’re finished with them, while the apps you use more frequently are kept in memory for faster access.”

Furthermore, Google’s Extreme Battery Saver mode turns off all the “power hungry features” and still enables users to select essential apps needed for emergencies to stay active.

Google also recommends making use of the Adaptive Charging feature that can prolong battery health, keeping it at a higher capacity for longer. This feature “learns your charging habits, then slows down your phone’s charging speed overnight to prolong your battery life.”
