Cyberdecks computers are the DIY tech trend of the year and, given many of the home baked machines are built using the Raspberry Pi motherboards, the microcomputer maker is jumping on board with an official guide on how to make your own.
If you’re yet to hear of the Cyberdeck, they’re portable computers assembled within some sort of unconventional and quirky Cyberpunk-styled casing ranging from a mint tin, to a ‘mermaid purse‘ to an old electronic typewriter.
There are loads of fun examples all over social media and they’re getting people who’re not traditionally into building tech giving it a go. Now, the guide published by Raspberry Pi today tells you everything you need to acquire to get the project underway and offers step-by-step instructions for building your your dream Cyberdeck.
The Raspberry Pi model includes a basic pelican hard case, a Raspberry Pi 5 motherboard, a battery pack and power supply, a flash drive for storage, a Bluetooth keyboard, a sound card and a touchscreen display, plus some additional cables, glue, and build components to ensure everything is assembled nearly and stays in place.
Not all Cyberdecks have to be created equally, they can be customised for specific purposes or design preferences, and the latest Cyberdeck Projects Special issue of the Raspberry Pi magazine is available online for free offers a host of options to explore. For its Maker Monday, the Raspberry Pi foundation suggests building one as a “wearable computer, a pocket computer, a launch monitor/centre for rockets or high-altitude balloons, or a knowledge store for the zombie apocalypse.”
“There are a few ways to customise your build,” the foundation advises. “You could use a Raspberry Pi Pico as a second processor to control an additional, smaller display, or to drive some LEDs — because you can never have too many LEDs in a build. Or, you could add sensors to monitor power consumption and keep an eye on your battery level… The possibilities are endless.”
