Samsung SmartTag 3 tracker to reportedly follow this annoying Apple AirTag design trait

Samsung is working on a new design for the next-generation Galaxy SmartTag bluetooth tracker that might be more reminiscent of Apple’s AirTag than previous versions of its own product.

According to leaked designs published by SamMobile, the company is abandoning the pill-shaped design with the massive lanyard hole, in favour of a squircle with no hole at all – just like the AirTag.

We wouldn’t be offended by the change of shape. And for those who just like to throw a tracker in a bag or suitcase, the loss of the hole wouldn’t be the biggest deal. However, attaching to keys and other portable items would now require the purchase of a case, which isn’t ideal.

On the plus side the new design will have a massive button on the middle, with an LED light, which will make it easy to activate on those occasions you’re searching for your phone or activating automations. You could argue its a net improvement in the design stakes.

Furthermore there’d be the usual crop of connectivity features like Bluetooth, Ultra Wideband (UWB) and compatibility with Samsung’s Find integration. It may have up to IP68 dust and water resistance, and improvement in battery life would be welcome too. You can currently get 500 days from the replaceable CR2032 cell.

As for the release, it obviously did not come at Samsung’s most recent Unpacked event. The last device skipped the summer event too. It arrived in October 2023. Maybe we’ll see it in October this year? Or perhaps if/when Samsung decides to launch its Galaxy S26 FE phone.
