If you’re after a great iPhone selfie, Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max, along with its 17 Pro sibling, won’t let you down. But, thanks to the laws of lens and sensor physics, they can’t hold a candle to the main rear cameras.
Trouble is, unless you’ve dialled in your blind framing, or stuck a mirror on the back like the good old cameras from the early 2000s, you’re better off sticking with the dedicated selfie cam for perfectly composed shots.
Or, you could consider snapping up Dockcase’s upcoming Selfix iPhone 17 phone case.
The case for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max builds a 1.6-inch circular AMOLED display directly into the back of the case. With a 480 × 480 resolution touchscreen, it acts as a live viewfinder, letting you use the higher-resolution rear cameras – including the 48MP main sensor and ultra-wide – for selfies and video.
The rear screen isn’t just a passive preview porthole either. According to Dockcase, it supports touch controls, focus adjustment, and a dedicated hardware button for shooting.
The company claims a “zero-lag” experience and says that no companion app is required – you simply slot your iPhone into the case and use it as normal. A refreshing change.

There’s more going on here, too. The Selfix case also includes a microSD card slot supporting up to 2TB of additional storage. Given that Apple doesn’t offer expandable storage on its phones, that alone could turn heads – especially for anyone shooting lots of high-resolution photos or video.
The case also features a USB-C port with PD 3.0 support for up to 100W input, and it’ll be available on Kickstarter in Blush Pink, Oat White, and Midnight Black, starting from an early bird price of $79 (RRP $129)
Of course, this is still a Kickstarter product. While Dockcase is an established accessories brand, crowdfunded hardware always carries a degree of risk until retail units are shipping and reviews are in. We’ll have to see how smoothly that rear display works in real-world use, and whether the added bulk is worth the upgrade.
Still, if it delivers, the Selfix could be supercharging your selfies this summer.
