TAG Heuer’s Monza is back for its 50th birthday, and this time in carbon fibre

TAG Heuer is celebrating 50 years of Monza history in the best way possible – a new watch. The new Monza Flyback Chronograph lands ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at, fittingly, Monza. It’s a limited run of just 500 pieces, each individually numbered.

The original Monza arrived in 1976. It was Heuer’s way of celebrating Niki Lauda’s world title the year before, the first for Ferrari since 1964. Heuer had been Ferrari’s official timekeeper since 1971, so the watch was a beautiful tribute.

This new version builds on the modern Monza Flyback Chronograph that TAG Heuer brought back in 2023. It’s a 42mm case, and this time it’s forged carbon rather than steel.

I’m a big fan, the forged carbon is light, tough, and every case comes out with its own marbled pattern, so no two watches look quite the same. It’s also very sporty, and reminds me of the interior of an Aston Martin.

The black dial keeps things faithful to the original. There’s a black flange with both tachymeter and pulsometer scales, a nod to the Monza’s motorsport roots.

White lacquered hands with Super-LumiNova, a red central chronograph hand, and red accents scattered around the dial tie it back to Heuer’s classic racing colours.

A chronograph minute counter sits at 3 o’clock, a permanent seconds display at 6, and the date’s tucked into an angled window at 9.

The strap is black perforated calfskin with red stitching. It suits the watch perfectly.

Under the hood is TAG Heuer’s Calibre TH20-12, COSC-certified and built with a flyback function. That means you can reset and restart the chronograph with a single push, without stopping it first.

It’s a proper motorsport complication, although there are more accurate ways of timing your laps nowadays.

You can see the movement through a sapphire case back, along with the limited-edition numbering.

The Monza has always been a bit of an oddball next to TAG Heuer’s bigger names like the Carrera and Monaco, but I really like the design.

The TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph is available now, priced at $13,400 in the US and £11,300 in the UK.
