Apple hasn’t given up on a full sequel to the Vision Pro headset, according to a new report, despite the focus seemingly switching to smart AR glasses.
The latest from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests the Vision Pro could be back on the agenda with a successor to the current Vision Pro M5 in the early stages of development under the codename N224. Previously, Apple was thought to be working on an N100 model – a so-called Vision Air – that could significantly reduce the bulkiness of the device that made wearing it for any length of time somewhat cumbersome.
And, with the N224 it’s possible that could be the case while also lessening another significant issue – the price tag. Gurman says it’s possible the next-gen model will cost a little less while retaining a flagship experience.
According to Gurman, Apple has as many as four concepts in mind for how the next Vision Pro will eventually present. One involves offloading the battery and computing components to an external pack. However, it is thought that Apple is still chasing an all-in-one design for any sequel model.
The well-connected reporter also reckons that Apple is experimenting with ways to make the design both cheaper and lighter by experimenting with materials.
This news doesn’t mean Apple is pushing the Vision Pro – arguably the most well executed flop in the history of tech – back to the top of its priority list. Gurman reckons the project remains on “life support” but those with skin in the game are “pressing their bosses to keep the category alive, funded and growing at Apple.”
According to the report no new model will be announced before 2028, while 2029 looks more likely.
