The Apple iPhone Ultra may be a few weeks away from breaking cover, but a new report offers insight from those who claim to have already got their mitts on the first Apple foldable handset.

Usually we’d be a little sceptical of people making such claims about an unreleased and unannounced Apple handset. However, the word comes via the erstwhile Apple watcher Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who is among the most connected people with current and former Apple employees.

Gurman says he’s spoken to “several people” who’ve used the iPhone Ultra, ahead of its expected September unveiling, and were willing to offer their real-world experiences of what it’s like to play around with a potentially game-changing product for Apple.

Gurman offers four observations from those lucky testers in particular – the pocketability of the device while folded, the durability of the hinge, the “iPad-like app layouts” and its usefulness as a camera viewfinder.

It all bodes well for the long-awaited first Apple foldable phone that is sure to be its priciest ever handset and thus need to impress mightily to convince people to part with their cash. In his Power On Newsletter, the Bloomberg reporter expresses his excitement that the era of truly exciting Apple product launches may be returning. He writes:

Over the past decade or so, the number of truly exciting new products from Apple Inc. has slowed to a trickle. There have definitely been a few dazzlers, like the AirPods in 2016, redesigned iPad Pro in 2018, Apple Watch Ultra in 2022 and Vision Pro in 2024. But it’s nothing like the era kicked off by the original iPhone, when that device was followed by the MacBook Air, iPad and iPad 2, iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, and the original Apple Watch. The good news is, I believe the tide is about to turn…

The iPhone Ultra is certainly the most anticipated iPhone of the modern era – at least since the first few generations where the annual updates offered more dramatic enhancements.
