The smartphone you can repair from home with a single screwdriver is now officially available in the US

Did you know Apple wants more than three hundred dollars to replace a smashed iPhone screen? A new display panel for the Fairphone 6+ will set you back just $90 – plus you can swap it in yourself. No painfully long in-store wait required. The ultra-repairable midrange smartphone even ships with a screwdriver in the box.

The Dutch phone brand’s earlier handsets were only available in the US with Murena’s de-Googled /e/OS software and carried a large price premium. That changes for the Fairphone 6+, which can now be had with vanilla Android 16 directly from Fairphone, for a more palatable $649. Handsets are fully unlocked and support both T-Mobile and AT&T.

Essentially a mid-life update to the Fairphone 6 launched in 2025, the 6+ brings a faster Snapdragon 7S Gen 4 chipset and steps up to 12GB of RAM – at a time many rivals are reducing how much memory they include as standard, on account of skyrocketing prices caused by the ballooning AI industry.

The 6.31in OLED screen with LTPO adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, 4415mAh battery and 30W wired fast charging are unchanged, as is the photography setup. You’re getting a 50MP main snapper and 13MP ultrawide at the rear, along with a 32MP selfie cam up front. MicroSD expandable storage returns, as does IP55 dust and water resistance.

Forest Green and Horizon Black colours are holdovers from the Fairphone 6, while the new Cobalt Blue hue was picked to highlight that 14 different minerals used in the phone’s construction have been obtained responsibly. Fairphone says the 6+ is the only full e-waste neutral smartphone officially sold in the US today, and that it has the smallest carbon dioxide footprint of any of its handsets to date.

Repairability remains second to none, with twelve user-replaceable parts including the screen, battery, USB port, cameras and speakers. All are sold directly from the company, for sensible money, and can be installed using the bundled screwdriver. There’s no soldering and it won’t harm the phone’s ingress protection. You also get a generous five year warranty, and software will be supported until 2033.

The Fairphone 6+ is on sale now for $649 in the US and £549 in the UK. Murena is also selling an /e/OS version, which is fully open-source and strips out Google’s behind-the-scenes data collection, for $699/£619.
