These iPhone 18 Pro camera upgrades are enough to make me want to upgrade

This is the biggest iPhone camera update in years, according to Apple (and I have no reason to doubt them). Apple has finally given the iPhone 18 Pro a variable aperture on its 48MP Fusion main camera.

That’s the setting, more associated with traditional cameras, that controls how much light hits the sensor, and allows you to blur a background on demand, or let in more light without cranking up the ISO.

I’ve wanted proper aperture control on an iPhone for years, as I’m not a fan of the simulated depth of field settings that use software trickery.

It’s a proper piece of engineering, with six wafer-thin blades, each thinner than a human hair that open and close using a tiny rotor mechanism.

Apple has also redesigned the lens itself to work around the variable aperture.

The software side has had a shake-up too. There are new cinematic effects you can apply after you’ve captured a shot, plus 4K timelapse and an improved audio mix for cleaner voice and music when recording video.

Pro Controls is the real star

Apple’s added a new ‘Pro Controls’ interface that lets you customise your camera setup and get to your most-used settings faster.

Within it, you get a histogram, white balance controls, and manual aperture across four settings.

There’s motion blur control too, so you can adjust shutter speed to either freeze action or add deliberate blur motion.

There’s also texture and grain control, including a dedicated skin texture setting, so you have more control over how your images look.

Video gets smarter as well, with focus tracking that keeps hold of a subject even if they change depth, or step out of frame and come back in.

Proving what’s real

Apple hasn’t ignored the AI elephant in the room, either. The iPhone 18 Pro can flag whether an image was made with AI, and it introduces something called Apple Reference Image’.

This locks in photo authenticity right at the sensor level, and creates a reference file the moment you take a photo. It’s described as a kind of digital negative that can’t be edited. It’s Apple’s answer to a world where, increasingly, you can’t trust what you’re looking at.

For me, it’s the aperture control that seals it though. That’s the upgrade I’ve been waiting for, and it alone is enough to make me want to move to the iPhone 18 Pro.
