There are two kinds of smart glasses aimed at fitness fans: ones that mainly entertain, by beaming music from a paired smartphone and filming your workouts from a first-person perspective (I’m looking at you, Oakley Meta Vanguard) and ones that are all about performance. The engo3 Cyclist is the latter.
Essentially an iteration of the original Engo 3 smart glasses that were primarily aimed at runners, this new version has cyclists in its sights with a revised design, bike-specific metrics for its colour augmented reality display, and slick integration with radar systems to keep you safer on the road.
As before, key statistics are shared from your Garmin smartwatch, bike computer or Apple Watch (via the ActiveLook app) and projected directly into your line of sight, so you can track real-time power zones without having to look down at your wrist or handlebars. The OLED screen promises to be bright enough to see clearly even on sunny days, while keeping your view of the road ahead unobscured.
Engo has expanded its compatibility with Garmin this time around, meaning anyone with a Varia radar system can get a visual notification of rear-approaching vehicles right in the HUD. That’s on top of showing structured workouts and having multiple, fully customisable data screens available with a few taps – there’s a whopping 40+ fields to pick from through the companion app.
Wider geometry brings better wind protection than the regular engo3, while the temples have been shaped to fit comfortably underneath a bike helmet. The nose pads are adjustable too, so you can really dial in the fit for epically long rides. Everything is IP55 resistant, so sudden downpours shouldn’t be an issue, and the battery should be good for up to 20 hours of continuous use between charges.
The engo3 Cyclist is launching in a quartet of colour options. Stride combines a dark green frame with pink/green lens tint; Dawn and Azure keep things simple with white or black frames paired with a blue lens tint; while Kenya goes for a more vibrant sunburst-style lens. Or you can step up to Aurora (white) and Shadow (black) frames with photochromic lenses, which automatically adapt to changing light levels for nighttime and wet weather riding.
