The iPhone Duo is still a month from being able to pre-order which gives me ample time to consider whether I’ll actually buy one. I’ve gotta say I’m really really tempted by Apple’s first foldable phone. However, there are a few lingering hangups that a recent hands-on video are helping me work through.
Specifically, I’m concerned about the typing experience, but after seeing this clip from Flourish Planner on Instagram I’m even more convinced the iPhone Duo might be the phone I’m looking for.
Remember on mobiles when you could comfortably type with one hand? That kinda went by the wayside when the minimum display size on most popular phones surpassed six inches. Unless you gripped the thing with two hands, you risked repetitive strain injury by reaching for the top corners of the keyboard.
However, the folded iPhone Duo experience looks very comfortable and easy to farm out messages with the single-handed grip. It kinda makes that quick response quicker and less disruptive, doesn’t it?
And as for opening it up, I was a bit worried that, in landscape mode, reaching across to the centre of the phone might be a bit of a stretch even with the two handed grip. The Instagram post did show that might be a little more challenging for those with smaller hands or shorter fingers. However, the split keyboard view tends to allay those worries too.
When you flip to portrait and open mode, it seems like the comfortable and spacious two-handed typing experience Apple hasn’t been able to master on standard iPhone models where typing can feel cramped and errors are littered throughout for less precise users.
Indeed, in all use case, I think the typing experience on the iPhone Duo will be an improvement over the current iPhone models. I can’t wait to get my paws on it.
