YouTube TV’s expensive genre Plans really weren’t worth the wait

YouTube has announced details of long-awaited YouTube TV Plans that enable streamers to select genre specific content bundles in line with their live TV viewing habits. However, don’t expect to save much over the all-you-can-eat price by choosing to slim down your live TV offering from the $82.99 plus tax.

YouTube says the Sports Plan costs $64.99. It’s $18 cheaper than the main plan and you’ll get the major broadcasters as well as the top sports networks. They include FS1, NBC Sports Network, all of the ESPN networks, and ESPN Unlimited.

If you want to save just $11 on your monthly bill, you can get the Sports + News Plan for $71.99. That’ll get you the sports, the national news and all of your doom-laden 24 hours networks like CNBC, Fox News, MSNBC, CNN.

If you’d prefer News + Entertainment + Family Plan essentially YouTube TV without the Sports, you’re pacing $69.99. That’s $13 cheaper than the main plan. That’ll get you Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, National Geographic, Cartoon Network, PBS Kids, and more.

This does offer more choice to YouTube TV subscribers, but it’s hardly a skinny bundle. If you just watch the sports, the saving of $18 will be appreciated. The full channel listing hasn’t been released for the Plans yet.

From YouTube’s preview imagery I can see it offers channels like TNT and TBS alongside the free to air channels like Fox, ABC and NBC. However, I’m not sure whether the Sports bundle will have, for example, the USA Network cable channel which offers the Premier League football. Without that, the bundle would be relatively pointless for me. I’ve asked YouTube for clarity.

There are discounts for new subscribers initially.
