Apple is reportedly planning on giving the standard iPhone 18 model a significant RAM boost that might make the base model a little more attractive this year.
The analyst Dan Nystedt has passed on a recurring rumour that the iPhone 18 might get a 50% RAM boost as part of a new A20 chip. The rumour, first circulated over a year ago, suggests the iPhone 18 might come with 12GB of RAM.
The original rumour, Nystedt passed along from a UDN report in China, suggested the A20 will be the first made with TSMC’s first 2mn production run. It may have 15% better computing power than the 3nm process, but without the loss in efficiency. All of this could help the standard iPhone 18 model handle the new Apple Intelligence features coming in iOS 27.
While the RAM boost would be welcomed, other reporting has suggested Apple may look to cut some costs in some other ways. According to a Fixed Focus Digital report, Apple may downgrade the manufacturing process so it’s inline with the iPhone 18e. It’s not clear whether that’ll have any noticeable effects compared to the iPhone 17.
Recent rumours have suggested the standard iPhone 18 model and an iPhone 17e will arrive a little later than the Pro equivalents, so those looking for the standard edition might have to wait until spring 2027.
The Pro 18 Pro and Pro Max phones will arrive in September this year, according to recent reports. The main event this year might be the long awaited iPhone Fold (aka iPhone 18 Ultra). It’s not yet clear when that will rock up, but hopefully alongside the Pro versions.
