The Sonos app is down on Apple’s App Store – but your speakers should still work

If you’ve tried downloading the Sonos app on your iPhone or Mac today, you’ve probably noticed something odd – it’s gone.

Reported by MacRumors, the Sonos app has temporarily disappeared from both Apple’s iOS App Store and the Mac App Store, leaving users unable to install it on new devices, or re-download it after deleting it.

Thankfully, existing Sonos systems don’t appear to be affected, and people who already have the app installed can still use their speakers normally. The issue currently seems limited to downloading or reinstalling the app through the App Store.

According to MacRumors, Sonos said it’s “working with Apple to get the app restored as quickly as possible”. On its own, this would probably be little more than an inconvenient technical hiccup. But the problem for Sonos is timing.

The company is still recovering from the fallout surrounding its controversial 2024 app redesign, which launched with missing features, broken alarms, playlist management issues, sluggish performance, and widespread complaints from long-time users.

The backlash became severe enough that then-CEO Patrick Spence publicly apologised just months later, admitting customers had been “let down” and promising a lengthy roadmap of fixes and restored functionality.

Since then, Sonos has continued updating and refining the software experience while trying to rebuild customer confidence. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that the company was preparing another significant app refresh focused on usability improvements, simpler navigation, easier room switching, and iPhone Lock Screen controls using Apple’s Live Activities feature.

That reported redesign was said to involve a more gradual rollout approach – a noticeable shift from the sweeping 2024 relaunch that triggered much of the criticism in the first place.

Either way, here’s hoping the app is back up and available for download again soon.
