Samsung teases its next huge launch with pizza and chocolate – what does it mean?

With not long to go until Samsung’s next-gen foldable phones get their official debut, the firm has released a series of social media sneak peeks that essentially confirm what the rumour mill has been saying for months: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is going wide.

Samsung’s teaser videos show rectangular chocolate bars, pizza slices and Korean Dalgona candy being cut down to size, going from tall and skinny to shorter and wider. The old shape is reminiscent of the Galaxy Z Fold7, while the new one is what leakers predict is on the cards for its successor.

We should reportedly expect a 5.4in outer screen which gives way to a 7.6in inner panel that’s wider than the 8in Galaxy Z Fold7 is tall. Those extra horizontal proportions should be ideal for on-the-go multimedia binges and three-app multitasking.

The last high profile foldable to take this approach was the original Google Pixel Fold, with newer rivals going down the long and slim route, so Samsung’s decision might sound like an odd one – until you clock that wide is the form Apple’s long-rumoured iPhone Ultra foldable is expected to take.

The firm calls the campaign an “early indication of how Samsung continues to evolve its foldable portfolio to support the different ways people work, create, communicate, discover and consume content”.

Little else is being said officially about the new handset. Hardware specs are a mystery and Samsung hasn’t even officially confirmed the day it’ll be revealed, though the next Unpacked event is widely expected to take place on July 22 in London. The common consensus is also that the Z Fold 8 won’t be arriving alone.

Filings to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) certification database earlier in the month seemingly confirmed the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra would land alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Surprisingly, it’ll be the slimmer of the two that’ll wear the Ultra badge, sticking with the same rough dimensions as the outgoing Z Fold 7. Whether it will do anything else to earn the Ultra distinction, like including the same camera setup as the Galaxy S26 Ultra non-folding flagship, remains to be seen.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 clamshell smartphone and Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2 wearables will almost certainly make an appearance at the event. The Google co-developed, Qualcomm-powered Samsung Galaxy Glasses could also get their first public outing.

We’ll get the full story at Unpacked, presumably on July 22.
