The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 may be the last of its kind, according to a new tip that claims Samsung is walking away from foldable flip phones after the forthcoming generation.
The Z Flip line has been a popular option for a number of different and very good reasons. It offers that early 2000s flip phone nostalgia, it’s much more affordable than the larger Z Fold series, it has a much smaller cover display for those seeking to minimise the distractions of a full screen candy bar phone while still seeing at-a-glance notifications, and it offers a pocketable form factor in its folded configuration.
However, Samsung may believe that after eight generations the direction of traffic is away from the Flip series and more towards the book-like foldables that open up like a tablet. The leaker Ice Universe – who has an excellent track record, especially on Samsung tech – wrote on X: “Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 will have Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 variant and might be last Flip from Samsung.”
Normally we’d take such a post as a mere rumour, but this is the second time we’ve seen speculation that Samsung might step away from the series for the 2027 releases.
The company is already planning a shorter and wider version of the Z Fold 8 handset, to go along with a Z Fold 8 Ultra that stays closer to the original form factor.
Losing the Flip phone form factor might not be set in stone yet, with Samsung probably mulling sales of this and the following generation before making a final decision. It may be that Samsung goes back to the Trifold form factor in place of the Flip. It may be that RAM is now so expensive, Samsung might decide it’s not worth the necessary price hike or diminished profit margins for a phone that doesn’t seem to get much better year-on-year.
Because, really, how much further can Samsung take this phone that probably going to get another incremental upset when unveiled on July 22?
