Acer’s Project DualPlay Mini concept gaming handheld makes total sense now that components costs so much

The latest batch of top-tier gaming handhelds now command an asking price well into four figures. Expect to pay the same again for a modern ultraportable laptop. That’s a serious chunk of change for anyone – so what if there was a gadget that could do both? Acer’s Project DualPlay Mini may only be a concept right now, but I seriously think it’s exactly the device we need to get through the ongoing consumer electronics price crisis.

On first inspection it looks a lot like the ‘traditional’ Predator Atlas 8: a large touchscreen sandwiched between two controller-like grips, stuffed with face buttons, joysticks, D-Pad and a touchpad. There’s also a neat little easter egg on the back cover, beneath the triggers and bumper buttons – Morse code that spells “Acer 50 since 1976”, marking the firm’s 50th anniversary in 2026. The purple finish and circuit board-style graphics are already suitably sci-fi too. So far, so typical gaming handheld.

Reach underneath, though, and the whole thing opens up to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard underneath. The screen then rotates 180 degrees, turning it into a micro-scale laptop that can get serious work done while solo. Or you can plug it into an external display for a more desktop-like experience without also having to bring a separate compact keyboard along. Dual Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports sit along the top edge, next to a 3.5mm headphone port.

Acer isn’t talking hardware specifics just yet, other than that the Project DualPlay Mini is Intel-powered. I’m guessing the plan is to use the same Arc G3 Extreme chipset as the firm’s newest Predator handhelds, which should also mean upwards of 24GB of RAM and plenty of SSD storage. Cooling is a direct match, with one Predator AeroBlade metal fan and one plastic fan.

That should mean it can tackle modern titles at Full HD resolution and a mix of medium and high detail presets, without having to rely too heavily on Intel’s XeSS upscaling tech. Desktop oomph should be more than sufficient for web browsing and daily work duties. Things like battery life are a complete unknown right now.

Unlike the Predator Atlas 7 also revealed at this year’s IFA, the Project DualPlay Mini is just a concept. There’s no word on if it will ever make it into production, and certainly no talk of pricing or availability at Acer’s booth.
