Apple still plans a 20th anniversary iPhone splash, so I’m torn on whether to buy the iPhone 18 Pro

Apple is still planning a major overhaul of its flagship iPhone to celebrate the handset’s 20th anniversary next year, according to a report, despite recent rumblings that the company has been forced to scale back its most ambitions plans.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman’s sources say the 2027 version will still be the “the biggest overhaul to what is now the iPhone Pro line since the iPhone X,” without elaborating further.

If you recall, the iPhone X was the first iPhone to dispense with the Home button, which certainly took some getting used to, but was ultimately a change we never looked back from. Whether Apple could introduce another such change in how we operate the device remains to be seen.

All of the reporting so far has suggested any iPhone XX special edition could user in an all-display front of the phone where the glass panel accounts for the entire front of the device. The display could also see Apple bring some of the Face ID sensors under the display too.

Whether Apple will ultimately have to scale back its ambitions is unclear, but it does appear as if they company is still planning to make a big splash. With the iPhone 18 Pro set to be revealed next week, it presents potential buyers with a dilemma to buy now or wait for the game-changer next year.

Earlier this month the Jefferies analyst Edision Lee, registered his belief that the radical redesign for the iPhone won’t be happening next year due to struggles with manufacturing the display. The analyst cites a ‘poor production yield’, meaning the company has been unable to produce a high enough percentage of defect-free components.

He called it “a major setback to efforts to bring in higher-priced iPhones amid soaring memory costs.”
