Philips Hue products don’t often see major discounts, which makes this year’s Prime Day deals especially notable. Meta is, by and large, a company built on other companies’ ideas. It has almost perfected the strategy: wait for a new platform or social mechanic to take off, then either buy or clone it, put it next to Meta’s unmatched user base and advertising engine, and watch the money pile up. Well, the next big thing appears to be turning everything into gambling. So why wouldn’t Meta make a Polymarket? On this episode of The Vergecast, David and Nilay discuss the reported prediction market app being built inside Meta, plus the company’s onslaught of other news this week — and…
One of the best deals this ongoing Prime Day has been on Apple’s latest flagship headphones. The AirPods Max 2 are still available for a heavily discounted price of $399 ($150 off) at Walmart, even though they sold out at Amazon.Since the Amazon deal kicked and Walmart is out of stock on one of the Max 2’s five colors, it seems this deal is not long for this world. Even discounted to $399 the AirPods Max 2 are still pretty expensive, but it’s a much better price for some fancy headphones. The sequel version of the AirPods Max look the…
The problem with iPhones and iPads is many of them look rather similar. Apple gives them a model number but chooses not to emblazon it anywhere on the casing any longer. This causes a problem if you need to know exactly which Apple phone or tablet model you’re holding. Here’s how to tell which iPhone or iPad you have. Apple’s fine portable products can look very much alike. Certainly without a detailed knowledge of camera bulges, dynamic islands or colour schemes. They’re kind of rectangular, with a couple of buttons and a Lightning or USB-C port. So how can you…
From October this year Samsung will roll out a variety of new paid tiers for access to its SmartThings API, including a $4.99 monthly plan for “non-commercial, individual developers.”It won’t just be developers that pay the price though. Some more advanced smart home users are likely to fall afoul of the rule change if they directly access the SmartThings API for more flexible smart home controls, or use third-party tools that do the same. “Use of the Home Assistant integration will be affected by their changes and will fall under their new ‘personal plans,’” wrote Paulus Schoutsen, founder of open-source…
Apple is expected to shake up its usual Mac silicon release strategy, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting that there won’t be Pro or Max versions of the upcoming M6 chip. Instead, Apple wants to “fast-track technologies that it originally planned to release later” with the M7 launch next year. The Cupertino company will reportedly only release a base model M6 chip “as early as this year,” with the base M7 chip set to launch sometime in the first half of 2027. The M7 Pro and M7 Max are then expected to follow “as early as the end of 2027.” That could…
Trump Mobile’s T1 Phone is now available for anyone to buy directly. The phone has previously trickled out to a small number of preorder customers — though The Verge is still waiting for both of its handsets — but now you can claim your own without having to place a $100 deposit.Android Authority spotted the change to the Trump Mobile website, which now lets you pay $499 directly for the phone, rather than paying $100 first. In true Trump Mobile fashion, they’ve half-assed the website update: One page on the site still says you can “join the waitlist” for the…
RAMageddon has come for computers. The price of memory chips, hard drives, and solid state storage has skyrocketed. That’s led to price increases on desktop and laptop RAM, SSDs, spinning hard drives, and pretty much everything that uses any of those things. Consoles are more expensive. Desktops are more expensive. Laptops are more expensive. Tablets and phones are more expensive. Even MacBooks, which started out expensive but then started looking like a pretty good deal, just got more expensive. All that sucks. But if (if) there’s a silver lining, it’s that most of the stuff you plug into a computer —…
As far as prices go, Apple is kind of a reverse canary in the coal mine. With its famously generous margins and immense purchasing volume, it can afford to ride out price fluctuations in its supply chain in a way no other consumer tech company can. So when Apple raises prices across nearly all of its product lines, you know that shit is well and truly real. That’s what happened earlier today: Apple increased pricing across Macs, iPads, HomePods, and even the Vision Pro. Prices jumped hundreds of dollars in many cases. The MacBook Neo’s key feature — a $599 starting price…
YouTube is adding even more TikTok-like features to Shorts, including a new “clear screen” mode that removes the icons and text from the video you’re watching. In a blog post on Thursday, YouTube says it’s also replacing the “thumbs-up” button with a “heart” icon, and is introducing a new option that lets you watch Shorts at 2x speed. As noted by YouTube, you can speed up a video by holding down the edge of your screen and lifting your finger when you want it to return to normal speed. You can lock the speed at 2x by pressing the player and…
