As 2025 drew to a close, Instagram head Adam Mosseri ended the year by doom-posting about AI. “Authenticity is becoming infinitely reproducible,” Mosseri lamented. “Everything that made creators matter — the ability to be real, to connect, to have a voice that couldn’t be faked — is now accessible to anyone with the right tools.” But people, Mosseri insisted, still wanted “content that feels real.” His proposed solution was finding a way to label real media. “Camera manufacturers will cryptographically sign images at capture, creating a chain of custody,” he said. The result would be a trustworthy system for determining…

Today, I’m talking with Hank Green, a longtime friend of Decoder and the cofounder and now former owner of Complexly, an online education company he started with his brother John in 2012. I say former owner because Hank and John have just converted Complexly into a nonprofit and given up their ownership of the company in the process. That’s some of the purest Decoder bait that ever was, because it’s all about how you structure a company and how you make decisions about changing that structure. So of course I had to bring Hank back on to talk all about it.But…

If you’re after a great iPhone selfie, Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max, along with its 17 Pro sibling, won’t let you down. But, thanks to the laws of lens and sensor physics, they can’t hold a candle to the main rear cameras. Trouble is, unless you’ve dialled in your blind framing, or stuck a mirror on the back like the good old cameras from the early 2000s, you’re better off sticking with the dedicated selfie cam for perfectly composed shots.  Or, you could consider snapping up Dockcase’s upcoming Selfix iPhone 17 phone case. The case for the iPhone 17 Pro…

Light-based internet provider Taara, which spun out of Alphabet’s “moonshot” incubator last year, just launched Taara Beam to provide 25Gbps connectivity within cities over invisible beams of light — line of sight permitting.Unlike last year’s Taara Lightbridge, which connects communities separated by water and mountains at distances up to 20km (over 12 miles), the shoebox-sized Beam can be mounted to street poles and roof tops for city-wide connectivity at distances up to 10km. The 8kg (less than 20 pounds) device typically consumes about 90W.Taara’s big advantage is speed. It rivals fiber in terms of throughput and can also be deployed…

Apple could be lining up a much bolder look for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, if the latest rumours are to be believed. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is currently testing a new flagship “deep red” finish for the iPhone 18 Pro, carrying on the momentum from the current iPhone 17 Pro’s striking orange finish. Gurman also states that the current orange colour has been extremely popular, particularly in China. If his report is true, it’s unclear whether Apple will be replacing the orange option, or adding red to the roster. For what it’s worth, Gurman marks that he…

If you’ve owned an iMac, iPod, iPhone, MacBook Air, or Apple Watch, you’ve already experienced the design handiwork of Sir Jony Ive. Now the former Apple design chief is working on a smart speaker and other hardware for OpenAI – the company behind ChatGPT. On paper, it sounds like a formidable pairing – the designer behind Apple’s most iconic products teaming up with the company that dominates consumer AI. XPeng is a Chinese brand that, first and foremost, specialises in tech. It also builds cars, but thankfully not as an afterthought. This, the XPeng G6 Performance, is an all-wheel-drive, mid-size SUV that’s clearly designed to take on the Tesla Model Y. It’s potent and, naturally, comes packed with tech treats. There’s space and comfort too. As a package, it ticks every box any disillusioned Tesla owner could imagine. The XPeng G6 occupies the same ballpark as models from Chinese brands Jaecoo, Omoda and BYD so competition is tough and pricing is keen. It’s also competing with itself, as buyers…

Introduction As part of the 20% of UK TV owners that doesn’t have an aerial, I’m the perfect candidate for Manhattan’s Aero 4K TV Streamer – but that’s not to say the tiny Freely set-top box can’t also smarten up your telly too. Maybe you want broadcast TV in another room but don’t have an aerial socket – and don’t fancy paying a professional to put one in. This £70 streamer is the inexpensive alternative anyone can fit, without having to break out a ladder or power tools. It also doesn’t incur a monthly subscription like Sky Stream and Virgin…
