AirPods are comfortably the best-selling true wireless earbuds in the world and the excellent AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods 4 hammer home that advantage. But, given the various price points, deciding are the best AirPods for you is a difficult task – especially when there are so many rivals we consider among the best wireless earbuds on sale.

In addition to the super-expensive AirPods Max 2, Apple sells three pairs of wireless buds – the AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods 4 (with and without ANC) and that’s before you get to its Beats range as well (but we’re going to be ignoring those in this guide).

So let’s pit the AirPods Pro 3, AirPod Max 2, and AirPods 4, against each other to find which Apple AirPods are best for you.

1. AirPods Pro 3

Specifications AirPods Pro 3
Connectivity Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C, Qi
Water resistance IP57
Battery life 8 hours (with ANC on) / 24 hours (with charging case)
Dimensions 47.2 x 62.2 x 21.8 mm / 1.86 x 2.45 x 0.86 in
Weight 5.55g (per earbud) / 44g (case)

The AirPods Pro 3 are the best AirPods you can buy. Powered by the H2 chip, they deliver a massive leap forward – Apple claims noise cancellation is twice as good as the Pro 2 and four times better than the original, with redesigned foam-tipped ear tips in five sizes ensuring a better fit and stronger passive isolation. The smaller, more ear-shaped buds are IP57-rated, audio quality is improved across the board, and battery life steps up to 8 hours with ANC on and 10 hours in Transparency mode.

What really sets the Pro 3 apart, though, is its new health tracking features – heart rate monitoring, calorie tracking, and support for over 50 workout types make them a compelling option for those who don’t wear an Apple Watch. Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence, is another standout addition, letting you hear translated speech through your AirPods and display translated text on your iPhone, even working locally without an internet connection.

Compared to the AirPods 4, there really is no contest – the Pro 3’s ANC, fit, audio, and feature set are in a different league entirely. As with the Pro 2, Apple will likely continue improving the Pro 3 through software updates over time, adding further value. At $249/£219, they’re a significant but justified outlay for anyone after the best truly wireless experience Apple has ever made.

2. AirPods 4 with ANC

Specifications AirPods 4 (with ANC)
Connectivity Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C, Qi
Water resistance IP54
Battery life 4 hours (with ANC on), 20 hours (with charging case)
Dimensions 46.2 x 50.1 x 21.2 mm / 1.82 x 1.97 x 0.83 in
Weight 4.3g (per earbud) / 35g (case)

The AirPods 4 with active noise cancelation are the best AirPods for most people. For those who don’t need the advanced health tracking, Live Translation, or top-tier noise cancellation of the Pro 3, the AirPods 4 hit a sweet spot that’s hard to argue with. The redesigned buds look closer to the Pros than ever, fit more ears than before, and Apple claims they’re the most comfortable AirPods yet — all without the silicone tips that some people find off-putting on the Pro models.

The headline addition is Active Noise Cancellation, previously a Pro-only feature, alongside Transparency Mode, meaning you’re getting the core audio experience most people actually want at a significantly lower price. The wireless charging case adds Find My network support and a built-in speaker to help track down misplaced buds, and Apple’s promising up to 30 hours of total battery life from the case.

Yes, you’re missing out on some premium touches – automatic switching, the superior ANC of the Pro 3, and the health features are all absent here. But they’re much more affordable, while covering everything the average listener genuinely needs day to day.

3. AirPods 4 (without ANC)

Specifications AirPods 4 (without ANC)
Connectivity Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C, Qi
Water resistance IP54
Battery life 5 hours / 30 hours (with charging case)
Dimensions 46.2 x 50.1 x 21.2 mm / 1.82 x 1.97 x 0.83 in
Weight 4.3g (per earbud) / 35g (case)

The AirPods 4 without ANC are the best budget AirPods you can buy. You’re getting Apple’s freshest design – more Pro-like than ever, more comfortable, and fitting more ears than before, along with a wireless charging case, Find My network support, and a case speaker to help locate them if lost. All the same features as the AirPods 4 above.

What you’re giving up is Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode, which does sting a little given how close the ANC model is in price. But if you’re someone who doesn’t need to block out the world and just wants a reliable, great-sounding pair of Apple earbuds at the lowest entry point possible, the base AirPods 4 are ideal.

4. AirPods Max 2

Scroll to see more →

Specifications AirPods Max 2
Connectivity Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C
Water resistance No
Battery life 20 hours (with ANC on)
Dimensions 187.3 x 168.7 x 83.4mm / 7.37 x 6.64 x 3.28 in
Weight 386.2 grams / 13.6 oz

The AirPods Max 2 are Apple’s flagship over-ear headphones, and in many ways they’re excellent – but they come with some significant caveats. Sound quality and noise cancellation are genuinely superb, the comfort is outstanding for long listening sessions, and the deep Apple ecosystem integration is as seamless as you’d expect. Software features like Live Translation and Adaptive Audio, carried over from the AirPods Pro line, add real value too.

The problems, however, are hard to ignore (especially at this price). Battery life sits at just 20 hours, a full 10 hours behind the Sony WH-1000XM6, and the headphones can’t be manually switched off, meaning you’re reliant on the case to put them into deep sleep. That case, meanwhile, is a genuine embarrassment at this price point, offering virtually no protection for the most delicate parts of the headphones. There’s also no wireless lossless audio support, which feels like an oversight on such an expensive pair of headphones.

The biggest issue is simply the price. Strong rivals found in our best noise-cancelling headphones guide, and even Apple’s own Beats Studio Pro offer comparable or near-comparable experiences for considerably less money. The AirPods Max 2 remain a premium, enjoyable product – but unless you’re deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem and simply want the best-looking option on the shelf, it’s very hard to justify the cost over the competition.

The AirPods 4 without ANC offer the best total battery life at up to 30 hours combined with the case, matching the AirPods Pro 3’s case combination.

Apple AirPods in-depth comparison: which is the best for you?

Need a little more help deciding which AirPods are best for you? We’ve added more details below:

Set up and functionality

All four options auto-connect seamlessly to Apple devices, and can all be used with non-Apple devices too (although you’ll lose some functionality).

The AirPods 4 (both models) are powered by the H2 chip, bringing improved ANC and reliable hands-free Siri.

The AirPods Pro 3 also has an H2 chip, which Apple says delivers noise cancellation twice as good as the Pro 2 and four times better than the original AirPods Pro.

The AirPods Max 2 also runs on the H2 chip, bringing features like Live Translation and Adaptive Audio that debuted on the Pro line.

All four support hands-free Siri, and device switching has been refined considerably across the range.

Controls

The AirPods 4 use a force sensor on the stem for play/pause, skipping tracks, answering calls and activating Siri.

The AirPods Pro 3 goes further with touch controls on the stem, letting you swipe to adjust volume without reaching for your phone.

The AirPods Max 2 takes a different approach entirely, using a digital crown, similar to the Apple Watch, for volume control and playback, plus a separate button for switching between noise cancellation modes.

All models allow for some degree of control customisation through your iPhone settings.

Design and fit

The AirPods 4 have a more angled, Pro-inspired design compared to earlier generations, sitting more securely in the ear without the need for silicone tips. They’re light at just over 4g each and rated IPX4 for sweat and water resistance.

The AirPods Pro 3 are slightly heavier but come with foam-tipped ear tips in five sizes, including a new smaller option, ensuring a better passive seal and fit for virtually any ear. They’re also rated IP57, offering significantly stronger protection against water and sweat.

The AirPods Max 2 are a different proposition altogether – premium aluminium over-ear headphones weighing 386g, available in five colours including midnight, starlight, blue, purple and orange. They’re comfortable for long sessions, though the weight is noticeable compared to rival headphones.

Charging and battery life

All four models support wireless charging and USB-C wired charging. The AirPods 4 and Pro 3 cases both feature a built-in speaker for locating them via Apple’s Find My app, with Precision Finding supported on iPhone 11 and later.

Battery life varies considerably across the range. The AirPods 4 without ANC offers up to 30 hours total with the case; the ANC model offers slightly less with noise cancellation active.

The AirPods Pro 3 delivers 8 hours of listening with ANC on and 10 hours in Transparency mode, with additional charges from the case.

The AirPods Max 2 offers 20 hours of listening, and requires the Smart Case to enter deep sleep mode, which is a real frustration given you can’t manually switch them off.

Sound quality and features

All four models support Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos for Apple Music, delivering an immersive listening experience on compatible tracks.

Sound quality steps up at each price point, with the AirPods 4 a clear improvement over older base-level buds. Both AirPods 4 models and the Pro 3 support Adaptive Audio, which intelligently blends Transparency mode and ANC together.

The AirPods Pro 3 adds personalised spatial audio, Live Translation powered by Apple Intelligence, and health tracking features including heart rate monitoring and workout tracking – features that put it in a league of its own within the earbud range.

The AirPods Max 2 delivers the best sound quality of the bunch, with deeply immersive audio and near-leading noise cancellation, though the absence of wireless lossless audio is a frustrating omission at the price.

Which AirPods are right for you?

If you want the best AirPods money can buy, the AirPods Pro 3 are the clear answer – the H2 chip, class-leading ANC, health tracking, Live Translation and improved fit make them a landmark upgrade. For most people, though, the AirPods 4 with ANC offer the sweet spot – core Pro features at a more accessible price. If budget is the main concern, the AirPods 4 without ANC remain a strong pick. And if you want a premium over-ear experience deeply tied to the Apple ecosystem, the AirPods Max 2 deliver superb sound and comfort.
