What a week it’s been for High Dynamic Range enthusiasts! Just days after Samsung announced the roll out of the new HDR10+ Advanced standard, Hisense has revealed the rival Dolby Vision 2 standard is coming to some of its best TVs via an over-the-air update.
While Dolby announced TVs from TCL and Philips will also be in line for Dolby Vision 2 since the announcement a year ago, Hisense has beaten both to the punch.
To experience the new format, you’ll need the newest Hisense UX Series, UR9 and UR8 RGB Mini LED TVs, or the U7 Pro Mini LED TV sets. They’re all at the higher end of the price range with the processing power and additional brightness capabilities to be able to handle the key improvements.
Those include a new Content Intelligence trick that relies on embedded metadata to optimise every scene by “dynamically adjusting” the picture. “No complicated settings. No guesswork. Content Intelligence automatically recognises different kinds of entertainment and viewing conditions, then fine-tunes the picture so every experience gets the visual treatment it deserves,” the company explains. Perhaps that might make Game of Thrones Season 8 viewable for the first time, while it also works with sports and gaming.
Next of the three major innovations is a new Image Engine that “intelligently optimises brightness, contrast, and colour scene by scene, bringing out the best your TV can deliver.” Finally the Authentic Motion tech promises to further eliminate motion blur. The company promises it will “preserves true cinematic motion quality, helping fast-moving scenes stay smooth and natural without unwanted blur or judder.”
In terms of how the standard is different to the first generation of Dolby Vision, the company promises richer colours, deeper contrast and brighter highlights. So… more of the same, just better? Pretty much.
