Apple’s first foldable phone is highly likely to be revealed next week at the ‘surprise and rise’ launch event, and we may have just learned about a new piece of the puzzle.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device unofficially dubbed iPhone Ultra will indeed offer support for wireless charging through Apple’s MagSafe technology.
While Apple’s mainline iPhone models and the iPhone Air offer support for the proprietary standard, support within the iPhone Ultra wasn’t always a given. That’s because of the supremely thin nature of the device when opened (rumoured to be as thin as 4.5mm) making it harder to fit the coil components necessary to support wireless charging. By contrast, the iPhone Air has a thickness of 5.6mm.
However, in an interview with Tom’s Guide, Gurman reckons Apple have been able to work in support for what many current iPhone users would deem to be an essential feature. He said: “All indications that I’ve heard is that MagSafe is in for this foldable phone. They were able to get it into the iPhone Air, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to get it into the foldable”
Furthermore, Gurman spoke out on what he believes will ultimately be the spec list for the iPhone Ultra when Apple takes off the wrapper next week. They include a 5.5-inch outer display and 7.8-inch inner display when unfolded, making for a passport-like form factor. He believes the phone will include the A20 Pro chip, while potentially using a second-generation Apple C-Series modem.
The influential reporter believes there’ll be a dual camera system on the rear with wide and ultra-wide lenses, but sacrificing the telephoto lens.
Apple hasn’t been able to completely dispense of the display crease, according to Gurman, although he does say it will be “minimal”. Meanwhile, there won’t be many compatibility issues with apps, because Apple has “gone to great lengths” to ensure automatic resizing to include the new form factor.
