Google has announced its Whoop-like, display-free wellness and fitness tracker called the Fitbit Air. The new wristband is designed to be worn 24/7 and integrates with the Google Health app and the new AI-powered Google Health Coach.
Google says the proactive wellness tracker is the Fitbit yet and features tiny sensors offering round the clock heart rate tracking including resting heart rate. More specific metrics include heart rhythm monitoring, alerts for atrial fibrillation, blood oxygen, and heart rate variability. In terms of sleep, you’ll get feedback on duration and sleep stages.
The device offers automatic activity detection and tracking, which will get better over time, while it’s also possible to start workouts manually from the app. The Fitbit air can offer coach-recommended guided workouts and send users personalised feedback thereafter.
Furthermore, you can take a picture of the workout equipment at the gym or even the whiteboard at your local strength training location to inform the Health Coach what you’re up to. The Fitbit Air, which is compatible with both iOS and Android, has a week long battery life, while fast charging capabilities will give you a full day of power in five minutes.
There are three band styles, including a Performance Loop made from recycled materials, a sweatproof and “wetproof” silicone Active Band and an Elevated Modern Band that is a more fashionable option. The tracker itself is waterproof to 50 metres.
Lastly there’s a special Stephen Curry co-designed Fitbt Air Special Edition Performance Loop band that “comes in elegant rye brown and a pop of game-day orange. It’s a stunning design for on and off the court. It features a unique water-resistant coating and a raised interior print inspired by athletic racing stripes specifically engineered to increase airflow during high-intensity movement.”
The Fitbit Air is available for pre-order now, starting at $100, while the Steph Curry edition costs $130. They all go on sale on May 26. No news on international launches yet. Buyers will also get a three month free trial of Google Health Premium, offering full access to the Google Health Coach.
