Microsoft has announced the price of Game Pass is dropping significantly from today, but the cut comes at a cost. New Call of Duty games will no longer be part of the proposition at launch.
In a blog post on Tuesday, Microsoft announced that Game Pass Ultimate is dropping from the elevated price of $30 down to $23 a month. PC Game Pass on the other hand, drops from $16.49 to $14.
That’s a massive boost for gamers who’d simply like access to hundreds of on demand games without paying through the nose for the new Call of Duty, which will still be available about a year later.
For Call of Duty fans, the savings on Game Pass extrapolated over the year should be enough to pay for the new game. And they’ll still keep access to the existing Call of Duty titles already in the library. None of the existing benefits – like multiplayer, cloud gaming, other major day one releases – are going anywhere.
The news comes after hints from inside the company that new head of gaming Asha Sharma was unhappy with the current pricing of Game Pass. In a leaked memo last week, Sharma reprotedly wrote: “Game Pass is central to gaming value on Xbox. It’s also clear that the current model isn’t the final one. Short term, Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation. Long term, we will evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system which will take time to test and learn around.”
In the blog post today, Microsoft added: “Our players cover a wide breadth of geographies, preferences, and tastes, so while there isn’t a single model that’s best for everyone, this change responds to a lot of feedback we’ve gotten so far. We’ll continue to listen and learn.”
