Sony’s most recent State of Play event brought a wealth of news for PlayStation gamers, including the reveal of God of War Laufey – the latest major game in the series from Sony Santa Monica, which is coming to PS5.

The new game is a prequel entry, which affords gamers the chance to play as Faye – the wife of the series’ lead character Kratos and mother of Atreus. Fans of the series will recall the character (formally named Laufey) had passed away at the beginning of the 2018 God of War reboot game. However, as Sony explained during June 2’s State of Play, death was just the beginning of a new adventure for this warrior.

In a blog post, Sony says: “To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.”

The game brings Faye to the forefront of the series for the first time “exploring the humanity, strengths, and flaws of the person whose legacy was beloved in the minds of many.”

Sony says the game will answer the question: “what happens to the gods when they die?”

Santa Monica studios is promising that the familiar combat DNA of the God of War series from the Greek era is present, but will feel fresh to long time fans of the series. Faye’s combat style has been built to “maximize lethality, power, and fluidity” and she’ll use the Leviathan Axe she previously wielded on her mortal coil.

Overall, the game sounds like it’ll be a lovely mixture of the two God of War eras (Greek and Norse) to deliver a fitting new chapter to the saga.

A post on the PlayStation blog adds: “Combining the movement and fluidity of the Greek era with the Norse era’s approach to world-building and close ties with characters — we’ve crafted an experience that has given our team incredible opportunities to take exciting creative swings, while staying true to the pillars of the God of War series.”

Sony has already revealed plenty about the game’s plot, combat and lore, including the detailed gameplay video you can see above. The company says the game is “coming soon” but hasn’t offered a release window yet.
