Google Wear OS 7 brings live updates and Gemini Intelligence to the wrist

Google has announced Wear OS 7 operating system for Android-based smartwatch models at Google I/O 2026. It promises to integrate the new Gemini Intelligence update, adds live updates, new widgets and improved battery efficiency by up to 10% compared with Wear OS 6.

The Watch OS 7 update for Pixel Watch, as well as Samsung’s Galaxy Watch range and other third-party updates will arrive for consumers later this year, but is available to sample via a Canary Emulator today.

Google says Gemini Intelligence, which requires a powerful chipset supporting Google Nano v3, will be supported by “select watches”. We’d have to infer that Google’s own Pixel Watch range will be part of that, but perhaps only the newest models.

In a blog post, Google is previewing the key features including Wear OS Widgets. This is the next evolution of the current Tiles interface, but brings the appearance into line with the smartphone and tablet experience. Google says the new widgets offer “greater expressiveness” and will help developers feel like their apps are consistent across all devices.

Next up is Live Updates, which is another existing feature on Android. “You can use Live Updates to surface real-time, important information from your watch or mobile app, providing your users with timely updates at a glance.” So you’ll be able to see the status of your food delivery, for example, without having to enter the app.

Task Automation, which Google has already announced for Android is coming to Wear OS too. Again, Google uses the example of placing a favourite order through DoorDash with minimal effort.

Google is also creating a new “full-featured, high-quality” fitness tracking experience. Per app media controls are coming too.
