The HBO Max streaming app has received an update and it’s bad news for people using older Fire TV devices.
The HBO Max app no longer supports the Fire OS 5 operating system, AFTV News reports. Now, to watch shows like Euphoria and The Sopranos, you’ll need a stick, box or television set running Fire TV OS 6 and higher.
Considering Fire TV devices running the fifth-generation operating system were sold right up until 2020, there’s likely to be plenty of people out there impacted by this decision. And, given, Amazon never updates its Fire TV devices beyond the version of the software the hardware is shipped with, this is an unfortunate development.
While this doesn’t help anyone with an unsupported device, those compatibility issues could soon be a thing of the past. Amazon recently began shipping streaming devices with the Vega OS, which is based on Linux rather than Android. This may make the operating system easier to update than the forked version of Android that Amazon had using for the Fire TV range up until the latest versions of the Fire TV Stick and the Echo Show range.
If you’re affected by the issue with your current Fire OS, there’s always the option to take the backdoor rout and sideload a version of the app compatible with Kodi.
