Here’s why the iPhone 18 release date is probably delayed

The iPhone 18 looks set to make our list of the best smartphones when it eventually lands. We say eventually, because another leak once again suggests that the iPhone 18 release date will be much later than usual.

A new report from Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital (via MacRumors), states that Apple has deliberately pushed the regular iPhone 18 into spring 2027 rather than its usual autumn slot. The idea, apparently, is to give the iPhone 17 a much longer runway, while also helping Apple deal with rising component costs and supply chain headaches.

That lines up with earlier reports, which point towards Apple splitting future iPhone launches into two waves. Under that rumoured plan, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone would arrive in late 2026, while the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 would follow months later in early 2027.

It’s unusual, but it also makes sense. Apple’s standard iPhones increasingly sit as the mainstream choice, while the Pro models tend to debut the biggest new features first. By giving the iPhone 17 more time to establish itself in the mainstream tier, Apple could keep momentum going without immediately replacing it with a newer model.

There is also, of course, the possibility that the standard iPhone 18 may not feel like a huge leap over its predecessor. The same leaker has repeatedly claimed that Apple is downgrading parts of the standard iPhone 18 as a cost-cutting measure, with display and chip changes both rumoured. Some components are also said to be shared with the cheaper iPhone 18e, potentially shrinking the gap between the two models.

If that’s true, delaying the launch could help soften the blow. An iPhone 18 arriving more than a year after the iPhone 17 feels easier to justify than one showing up a year later with fewer meaningful upgrades.

A big part of the decision may also come down to manufacturing pressure and rising component costs. Apple’s already been dealing with rising memory chip prices across its wider hardware lineup, and rising RAM and storage costs may be contributing to Apple’s launch strategy changes.

At the same time, Apple’s rumoured foldable iPhone would likely demand huge manufacturing resources. Staggering launches could give Apple more breathing room while also turning September into an even more premium-focused event centred around Pro devices and foldables.

Of course, none of this iPhone 18 release date information is official yet. But when multiple analysts, supply chain reports, and leakers all start pointing in the same direction, it usually means there’s at least some truth behind the rumours…
