Why is Dua Lipa suing Samsung?

Pop star Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for a minimum $15 million dollars claiming the company used her image on television retail boxes without her permission.

The singer alleges Samsung placed a copyrighted image labelled as “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” on the cardboard boxes containing televisions.

Dua Lipa’s representatives say they own the copyright images this enabled Samsung to benefit from a perceived endorsement never made. The lawsuit alleges the image was featured on a box for a “significant portion” of all TVs Samsung has sold in the United States since 2025.

The attorneys cite social media posts from users claiming they bought the televisions just because they saw a picture of Dua Lipa on the box – which is a quit preposterous reason to buy a television in the first place, but you never know with people.

“I’d get that TV just because Dua is on it. That’s how obsessed I am,” said one cited social media post (via the New York Times).

The filing to the California court, the representatives said: “Ms. Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use.”

Dua Lipa wants “no less than $15 million” in damages for the alleged “copyright infringement, trademark infringement and misappropriation of Plaintiff’s likeness and image.”

Samsung has declined to comment.
