The next-generation iPad mini tablet will be an absolute powerhouse judging by a new leak that suggests the brand new A20 Pro processor will do the heavy lifting behind the OLED screen.
MacRumors snooped within Apple’s cost and found what it believes to be a poduct icon for the next iPad mini, which suggests a massive upgrade in processing power on the A17 Pro chip within the last model released two years ago. The A20 Pro was revealed earlier this month for the iPhone 18 Pro and is Apple’s flagship mobile chip.
When Apple dropped the iPad mini 7th generation in October 2024, the A17 Pro chip was already a year old and was released within the iPhone 15 Pro models. This would change the precedent to give the iPad mini the most recent Apple processor.
Dropping in the A20 Pro would naturally give the iPad mini access to the full suite of Apple Intelligence tools and future proof it for a few years to come.
It’s the first chip built on a 2-nanometer process which has a 6-core GPU, 7-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. In a press release upon the release of the Apple iPhone 18 Pro earlier this month, Apple says the A20 Pro “set a new bar for mobile computing” with double the AI processing power of the previous generation.
“With huge upgrades across the entire chip, A20 Pro is a powerhouse for everything from more advanced on-device AI workloads to demanding games, and is designed to deliver exceptional performance for years to come,” Apple says.
Elsewhere, Apple is expected to retain the current design for the iPad mini 8th generation, according to today’s leak, meaning the 8.3-inch display will be retained. However, that rumoured OLED screen should raise the game considerably.
